The UCSI university food fair was held on 15th and 16th of July for all students to generate new ideas in food product development as well create an interest in nutrition for the public. In this food fair, we can learn to work on real-world problems and understand the connections between class teaching and real-life setting.


There are so many people come to support our food fair. Before the food fair held, we have been spraying all the news about this fair in facebook and by mail.

This is the title of my poster " Durian + Tapai"
We were presented our poster on the second day of the food fair. For this poster presentation, we have to explain to them, why mixed intake of this two type of food will lead bad to our body. Some of them asking the question that are really tricky for us. We learn a lot through everyone of them.

The 1st day, we sold crispy biscuit " sweet potato biscuit". Although we need to sell about 122 packet of biscuits, but we make it. All the biscuit was sold out before 3pm. We feel happy because It was a fun and great experience for me which we can sold all the biscuit for charity.
Although i was tired after the food fair, but this fair really meaningful to me. We can learn how to explain and share the information with all of them. After the food fair, I am particularly happy because I can learn a lot of knowledge that can't learn from textbook.
The food fair so benefited greatly to me.

durian and tapai....will it killed?


The popular myth whether durian mixed with tapai will kills, is brings out of discussion again. There are a lot of advice that not be eating tapai (because of containing alcohol) and durian at the same times. Lets observe and determine a conclusion if there is any logical explaination about these local myth by observing the nutritional, metabolism and chemical components of durian and tapai and how they interact together to give an adverse effect in the body. Some of them say that it just will causes the stomach and make absolutely no sense. Some of them say that it will cause head spinning and hard to breath. Some of them say that it really will cause died. Now, i would like to discuss the combination of durian and alcohol.

Nutritional value of eating Durian

Durian is known as the ‘king of fruits’ and have a unique and distinctive features with its edible yellow flesh wrapped in a thorn-husked cover and commonly found in South-East Asia.

The edible flesh of the durian consists of volatile compounds including esters, ketones, and different sulphurous compounds. It is the sulphurous compound that gives a distinctive smell and taste; and as well as giving a warming property in the body and is subject to cause excessive sweating.

The durian fruit has some very interesting compounds. It has organosulphur compounds which are organic compounds that contain sulphur which is a very important source for enzymes and detoxification in your body. It actually even prevents cancer and detoxifies carcinogens. It is also naturally antibacterial.
Nutritional value of eating Tapai

Tapai is a well-known indigenous fermented alcoholicbeverage among the Kadazan-Dusun-Murut (KDM) ethnicgroup of Sabah during festive occasions and gatherings.

Tapai is mainly made of glutinous rice, moulds and yeasts, simple carbohydrates is the major nutritional component in tapai and has a high glycaemic index of 98. It has a small protein and fat values and micronutrients such as calcium, iron and vitamin.


Combination of eating durian and tapai

Eating durian is said to “heat the body” (i.e. significantly raise blood pressure). In combination with tapai, which is fermentation from alcohol may result in a stroke. So, durian and alcohol do not recommended intake together. Recent research revealed that MonoAmine Oxidase Inhibitors (MAOI’s) are responsible for this phenomenon.
The presence of harmaline in durian kernels as well as in the fruit pulp has been confirmed. It will, in conjunction with alcohol, induce hypertensive periods, whereby the blood pressure is raised to absurd high levels, and sometimes even reaching life-threatening values of 300. Durian is also a source for tyramine. In absence of alcohol tyramine is converted in the gastro-intestinal tract swiftly to the corresponding N-oxide, but this conversion is greatly inhibited by harmaline in the presence of alcohol. Effect after eating durian and tapai

So, combination of harmaline and tyramine is dangerous, is greatly inhibited by harmaline in the presence of alcohol. Thus, the tyramine level in the blood reaches unacceptable high levels, eventually leading to a stroke. We should avoid consuming foods that contain high levels of the amino acid tyramine, as this can cause a dangerous rise in blood pressure. This means that the risk of a hypertensive crisis, a dangerous high blood pressure crisis from eating tyramine-rich foods such as cheese, is potentially lower with harmaline than with non-reversible MAOI'.The presence of tyramine in the body from such sources, which potentially can occur when MAO is inhibited, can precipitate a hypertensive crisis that is characterized by severe increases in blood pressure, intense headaches, increased heart rate, palpitations, and other effects that can be serious or fatal. Reports on the adverse effects, which include cardiac episodes or deaths, in patients drinking alcohol with durian persists
. The symptoms have been described as being very unpleasant with clinical manifestations such as facial flushing, palpitation, drowsiness, vomiting and nausea.

ARGUE of the combination of eating durian and tapai might killed

Some scientific studies have actually been conducted to investigate the validity of this belief. Despite the important contributions to our knowledge of durians and human/animal physiology provided by these experiments, some flaws are evident. Most of them were lacking a control treatment in which animals were fed an equivalent mass of some food item other than durian. Thus, any effects on alcohol absorption might be due to the presence of food in the stomach, and not durian. There might because the presence of durian affecting durian absorption.
At this point, it is fair to say that consumption of durians with alcohol has not been shown to be harmful."

Lastly,my opinion.......

We have find out that the combination of durian and tapai (alcohol) will bring some bad effect to our body. Different body have different metabolism. So, some of them will just feel full and uncomfortable in stomach. Consumption of durian and tapai has not been shown to be harmful, but 100% sure is that will bring some bad feeling to our stomach. So, why we want to make ourself suffer?
